Sen. Landrieu Announces More Than $25M in FEMA Grants
WASHINGTON — U.S. Senator Mary L. Landrieu, D-La., today announced a total of more than $25 million in federal grants for southeast Louisiana. These awards come from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and will fund repairs to areas damaged by Hurricanes Katrina and Gustav.
“I am very pleased that our area is receiving this funding, which is critical for the rebuilding efforts of these parishes,” Sen. Landrieu said. “These areas that were devastated by hurricanes Katrina and Gustav continue to rebuild and still need our attention and our aid. I will continue to advocate for our region to ensure we are prepared for future storms.”
The grants include:
- $1 million for Lafourche Parish to raise the height of an existing flood wall to prevent further erosion of the Golden Meadow flood wall along the west bank of Bayou Lafourche. This project will consist of installing 1,500 linear feet of vinyl sheet pile flood wall and replacing soil.
- $2.5 million for six schools in Washington Parish to build protections against damaging winds and debris. This project will install a mesh Hurricane Barrier Shutter System to the glass of all exterior windows and doors at Varnado High School, Varnado Elementary School, Franklinton Primary School and Wesley Ray Elementary School. Franklinton Junior High will replace all windows and Enon Elementary will install hurricane screens.
- $5.5 million for the St. Bernard Sheriff Department to replace supplies which were damaged. Supplies fall into these categories: information technology, law enforcement, office equipment, furnishings, kitchen and laundry equipment.
- $2.5 million for Louisiana’s Facility Planning and Control to build a new Fine Arts Building at Nunez Community College.
- $3.4 million to repair roads and streets in the Plum Orchard neighborhood in New Orleans.
- $6.9 million to repair roads and streets in the Pontchartrain Park neighborhood in New Orleans.
