FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 02/26/2009
WASHINGTON -- United States Senator Mary L. Landrieu, D-La., today commented on the release of President Barack Obama's Fiscal Year 2010 federal budget proposal. Sen. Landrieu said: "President Obama's budget proposal represents an honest and balanced blueprint for America's future. Although we face a daunting economic crisis, bold ideas are necessary to help us reform many of the broken programs left by the previous administration. This budget emphasizes high-return investments and makes significant strides in restoring fiscal responsibility and deficit reduction. "President Obama's focus on Gulf Coast recovery and coastal restoration is particularly refreshing. His commitment to our rebuilding effort has been evident since his first day in office, and this budget is proof. This proposal addresses storm protection and flood control, while enhancing Corps project planning and performance. President Obama is correct -- the Corps needs new strategies and stronger partnerships. "I look forward to reviewing the plan in further detail to ensure that the tax law changes strike the right tone for future growth. For example, I am particularly concerned about changes to the oil and gas tax regime. It was only eight months ago that oil reached $150 a barrel because our domestic supply was tight. Due to the economic crisis, the price of oil is temporarily low. In these tough times, we must make sure that we do not disadvantage our domestic energy industry -- which is critical to the nation's security— against foreign competitors. This industry provides good-paying jobs and plays a critical role in helping us reduce our dependence on foreign oil."
