Senator recommended May for post earlier this year.

WASHINGTON -- United States Senator Mary L. Landrieu, D-La., today welcomed President Obama's nomination of Genevieve "Genny" May as U.S. Marshal for Louisiana's Eastern District. May is the first woman from Louisiana to receive a presidential nomination for U.S. Marshal. Sen. Landrieu recommended Lt. Col. May for the post on April 27, 2009.

"President Obama has nominated a distinguished public servant -- Lt. Col. Genny May -- and I am proud to have recommended her for this position," Sen. Landrieu said. "Lt. Col. May has dedicated her career to fighting crime and keeping our communities safe. Louisiana will always be grateful for her leadership during Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, when she served as a liaison between federal, state and local law enforcement agencies. Her credentials are stellar, and she will serve our state and nation with honor and integrity as U.S. Marshal."

Lt. Col. May is the Deputy Superintendent with the Bureau of Investigations of the Louisiana State Police. She has been with the State Police since 1978, rising through the ranks to her current position. In 2006, May was an Adjunct Professor at Baton Rouge Community College, and from August 2005 to December 2006, she was an instructor at Southern University in Baton Rouge.

From 1986 to 2009, May served in the U.S. Navy Reserves, from which she retired with the rank of Master Chief Intelligence Specialist. She has a Master of Science degree in criminal justice from Southern University and another master's degree in public administration from Louisiana State University. In addition, she received a Bachelor of Science degree in zoology from Southeastern Louisiana University.
