WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Mary L. Landrieu, D-La., hosted Supreme Court Nominee Samuel Alito this afternoon to discuss both his record and the upcoming confirmation process.   Immediately following today’s meeting, Sen. Landrieu released the following statement.

Sen. Landrieu said:

“This afternoon, I had a short but productive conversation with Judge Alito about our families, his views of the American judicial system, and Louisiana ’s efforts to rebuild following Hurricane Katrina.  Although my first priority is to do all I can to help the people of my state rebuild and recover, I take the Senate’s constitutional responsibility to advise and consent on nominees to the Supreme Court very seriously.

“During our introductory conversation, Judge Alito told me that he understands what a significant step this is in his career and that he believes he is prepared and ready to take that step.  However, it is still too early to decide whether or not I will vote to confirm Judge Alito to the Supreme Court.  The Judiciary Committee has a great deal of work ahead, and we must allow the committee members the time to fully complete their important work before any decisions are made.”
