Description:
Girls and Boys Town cares for troubled children -- both boys and girls -- and for families in crisis.

How you can help:
A HOSTS (Help One Student To Succeed) volunteer works one-on-one with a child who has difficulty reading. No teaching experience is necessary, only the desire to help a child learn. Volunteers can make a difference in a child's life by giving one hour a week. Training and materials are provided.

The Gulfsouth Youth Action Corps

Description:
The Gulfsouth Summer Youth Action Corps (GYAC) is a volunteer service corps dedicated to rebuilding and reenergizing high-quality youth educational and recreational services in areas devastated by hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

How you can help:
GYAC is actively recruiting energetic college-student volunteers from around the country to administer a holistic, cutting-edge, youth leadership program designed for students entering grades 5th-8th. New Orleans Summerbridge

Description:
Summerbridge is an educational intervention intiative designed to identify highly motivated 5th through 7th grade New Orleans public school students with limited educational opportunities. The program aims to empower them to face the challenges of middle and high school.

How you can help:
Volunteers are needed in all subject areas to help with after-school tutoring. Volunteers teach English, math, and/or an elective class, such as art, dance or music to a class of 7 students from the program.

Odyssey House Louisiana, Inc. provides long term residential substance abuse treatment for adults, adolescents and women who are single, pregnant or with dependent children.

Description:

Louisiana SPCA

Description:
The Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (LA/SPCA) is a private
non-profit organization dedicated to the elimination of animal suffering. Chartered in 1888, we are the oldest and most comprehensive animal welfare organization in the state. We provided care and basic medical services for approximately 11,000 homeless and unwanted animals each year. We had many programs and services in place to educate the community, reduce pet overpopulation and improve the quality-of-life for the animals in our community. We will not forget where we were.

Make-A-Wish Foundation of Louisiana

Description:
Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children between the ages of 2 1/2 and 18 who have been determined by a physician to have a life-threatening illness, creating the probability that they will not survive beyond their 18th year. Make-A-Wish Foundation provides a joyful and meaningful experience that benefits the entire family. A wish can be almost anything -- from hugging puppies to meeting Presidents. A wish is limited only by the child's imagination. The chapter serves the 64 parishes of the state of Louisiana. Since beginning operation in April 1996, over 290 wish requests have been received and over 170 wishes have been granted.

New Orleans Outreach

Description:
New Orleans Outreach is a non-profit organization that brings the community into the schools. Young Leadership Council

Description:
In 1986, a group of young adults formed the Young Leadership Council (YLC), a non-partisan, non-profit volunteer organization, that would afford them opportunities for hands-on involvement in the community unmet by existing civic or political organizations.

The mission of the Young Leadership Council is to develop leadership through community projects. Voting members are between the ages of 21 and 42. Currently, over 1,100 members are working to make an impactful change in New Orleans.
